You can’t get there from here

2 Oct

It’s like the island gets smaller each day. I hope I’m not finally losing my last few marbles. What shall I do then?

There are/were three boats. The boats come from three ports. The one to Port Clyde is the mailboat, and that’s the one I generally take. Exiting the Laura B or Elizabeth Ann, you’re then stuck in Port Clyde, which is also super isolated. It’s like escape is incredibly difficult.

Eh, I’ll figure it out. The time to plot is now and time is running out. Soon there’ll only be one boat and eventually it’ll only come once a week. Nope. Not spending the winter on this island. It’s cold enough now.

Wednesday

So I woke up today. Great.
I spent the last evening with some guests staying in a cottage. It’s an older woman and her elderly mother. Her mother makes the most beautiful paintings and she can’t hear and barely sees, it is incredible. And the other one, Nancy, she’s awesome and swears up a storm. I found two random soul mates. Was lovely. I was scared and nervous but I’m glad I came to the island. I was probably meant to be here. They both thought so, too. A truly simple and nice evening.
Then morning comes, and I want to talk about it. And Jim is gone. And Mr. Frank is in Mississippi. What world do I live in? I’ve gone wild and haven’t anyone to document and laugh and fumble with. Now life is weird.
I miss Jim. He was a good one.

Losing Weight

6 Apr

This month I’m getting rid of almost everything that doesn’t fit in my Airstream. Getting tires replaced, repacking the ball bearings, fixing the locks…

So I’m selling and donating and giving away my stuff. If I don’t travel soon I’m sure to go stir crazy. It is a little nostalgic to get rid of some of my little trinkets, though.

We collect so many things over the years.

Springtime Adventures

I have a dream of living in a tiny house with Mr. Frank and traveling the continent. What better time to start than now? I’m certainly not getting any younger.

This is what my blog does in 2013

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 7,500 times in 2013. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.

Phew. For a minute there, I lost myself

11 Sep

Sleeping in the rainforest. I was dreaming about the memory again last night.

We set up camp in the Olympic Mountains underneath a giant tree stump as big as the truck. We ate the fresh salmon we had bought in Olympia. After dinner we walked down to Hood Canal and took a swim in the bioluminescence. The water was cool and clear and glowing and perfect.

And for a moment there was peace.

We got out of the water and walked along the shoreline for a while. The beach was dark and quiet and serene. So dark, in fact, that we had somehow missed this sign:

I should know better than to think things can be so perfect.

You Drive Me Crazy

Our roadtrip from Albuquerque to Austin was quite a spectacle. A lot of family, a very small car.
